- 1Isra and Mi'raj (27th Rajab) - Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and ascension to the heavens
- 2Month preceding the sacred months of Sha'ban and Ramadan
- 3Beginning of the spiritual preparation period for Ramadan
Recommended Practices
- Increased worship and good deeds (as it's a sacred month)
- Voluntary fasting (no specific days mandated, but generally encouraged)
- Increased prayers and Quran recitation
- Avoiding warfare and conflicts (sacred month)
- Preparing spiritually for upcoming Ramadan
- Extra voluntary prayers on the night of Isra Mi'raj (not obligatory but practiced)
- Seeking forgiveness and making du'a
- Charity and helping the needy
Fasting in Rajab
There is no specific obligation to fast in Rajab, but voluntary fasting during the sacred months, including Rajab, is generally encouraged as a meritorious act. However, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not specifically single out Rajab for fasting. Some Muslims choose to fast on Mondays and Thursdays or on the White Days (13th, 14th, 15th) of Rajab. There are no authentic hadiths prescribing specific fasts for Rajab, so Muslims should follow general guidelines for voluntary fasting.
Historical Context
Rajab is most renowned for the miraculous event of Isra and Mi'raj, which occurred on the 27th night of Rajab. During this journey, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem (Isra), and then ascended through the seven heavens (Mi'raj), where he met previous prophets and ultimately experienced the presence of Allah. It was during this journey that the five daily prayers were prescribed as an obligation for Muslims. While some scholars debate the exact date, the 27th of Rajab is widely commemorated. Historically, Arabs honored Rajab even in pre-Islamic times as a month of peace.
