What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr (عيد الفطر), meaning the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is one of the two major Islamic celebrations — the other being Eid al-Adha. It is observed on 1 Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established Eid al-Fitr after migrating to Medina. He said: "Every nation has its celebration, and this is our celebration." (Bukhari & Muslim). Eid al-Fitr is a day of joy, gratitude, and community — a reward from Allah for those who completed the fast of Ramadan.

How to Celebrate Eid al-Fitr

1

Ghusl & Best Clothes

Take a ritual bath (Ghusl) before the Eid prayer and wear your best or new clothes. It is Sunnah to put on perfume and dress well for this special occasion.

2

Pay Zakat al-Fitr

Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana) before the Eid prayer — for yourself and every member of your household. This obligatory charity purifies the fast and feeds the poor on Eid day.

3

Eat before the Prayer

It is Sunnah to eat an odd number of dates (or any food) before going to the Eid prayer — unlike Eid al-Adha where eating after the prayer is preferred.

4

Eid Prayer

Attend the Eid congregational prayer in an open field or mosque. The prayer consists of 2 rak'ahs with additional takbeers, followed by the khutbah (sermon).

5

Takbeer & Greetings

Recite the Eid takbeer while walking to the prayer: 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd.' Greet others with 'Eid Mubarak.'

6

Visit Family & Give Gifts

Spend Eid visiting family, relatives, and neighbors. Exchange gifts, especially for children. Many cultures have traditions of giving Eidi (Eidiyya) — monetary gifts to children.
